History

The 2.8-kilometre-long Gieselau Canal was opened in 1937 as a replacement for the Rendsburg lock and connects the Kiel Canal with the Eider. The construction of the Kiel Canal divided Oldenbüttel into a northern and a southern part of the municipality.

The Hanerau-Hademarschen–Hamdorf stage of the NOK Route follows the canal to Oldenbüttel. In northern Oldenbüttel, cyclists can choose which side of the canal they wish to continue on at the Gieselau Canal. The canal setting is ideal for extended walks and cycling tours. The Oldenbüttel canal ferry provides access to the opposite bank and the Gieselau Canal. It carries cars, bicycles and pedestrians between the banks of the canal and is free of charge. Culture

The Gieselau lock has two steel bascule bridges, which also support the sliding gates. The road bridge over the Gieselau Canal was modelled on Dutch bascule bridges. The Gieselau lock offers a brief stop for visitors interested in technology, cycle tourists and water enthusiasts. The historic village centre near the canal includes houses with thatched roofs. The historic chain ferry “Alte Dame” has been preserved as a technical monument in nearby Steenfeld and can be visited there.
