Hillgroven: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Landscape
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Hillgroven can then continue searching for accommodation. Hillgroven is described as a largely dispersed settlement and lies amid fields of grain, rapeseed, cabbage, potatoes and sugar beet in the Wesselburen marshland. Around Wesselburen, the horizon changes with the tides; as a result, the view differs at the same time on consecutive days. Around 10,000 hectares of intensively farmed marshland characterize the northwest of Dithmarschen.
Nature
The Wesselburen holiday region combines nature-oriented recreation with the North Sea and the adjacent Wadden Sea National Park, which is described as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park is one of 14 national parks in Germany and the largest between the North Cape and Sicily. It is described as one of the most bird-rich areas in Europe. Hundreds of plant and animal species occur in the Wadden Sea salt marshes that are found only in this habitat.
Around 620 hectares of the Eider Estuary area are protected to preserve characteristic plant and animal species. The Eider Estuary remains a wetland of international importance and a refuge for species on the Red List.
History
The Hillgroven pumping station was built in 1972 as an outer dike sluice during the reinforcement of a dike. It is located near Koogweg in Wesselburenerkoog. In Wesselburener-Deichhausen, the Hassenbüttel village mound is designated as a HISTOUR site.
Culture
Dithmarschen's cultural offerings include Büsum Museum Harbour, the Dithmarschen State Museum, the Klaus Groth Museum and the Albersdorf Stone Age Park.
Food and Drink
Dithmarschen produces around 90 million heads of cabbage each year and is Europe's largest contiguous cabbage-growing area. The Westhof farm shop in Friedrichsgabekoog is a farm shop.
Activities
The Eider Barrage is a popular excursion destination in the area around Wesselburen. The 230-metre-long engineering structure was designed to protect the Eider Estuary from storm surges in the North Sea and to ensure the drainage of the Eider area. A road tunnel runs through the Eider Barrage, connecting Wesselburenerkoog with the Eiderstedt peninsula.
The Hold on Tide bouldering hall in Hedwigenkoog is a climbing hall. Dithmarschen is described as an area with generally flat terrain for cycling; the highest elevation is in Schrum, at 78.81 metres above sea level. Information on guided mudflat walks is available for the area around Wesselburen.
