Culture

The memorial is designated as HISTOUR site M40 and commemorates Soviet prisoners of war. The memorial contains a bronze sculpture of Charon carrying a mother and her dead son across the Styx. Guided tours are offered there as needed.

Windbergen is the pilgrimage centre of the Dithmarschen Way of St. James. The church there is an ecumenical pilgrims’ church. In the late Middle Ages, Windbergen was a pilgrimage site. The Romanesque corpus of Christ discovered in 1495 is the oldest yellow-cast figure of Christ on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.

Village and Landscape

Gudendorf has the character of a rural Geest village. Several thatched-roof houses have been preserved as part of the village renewal programme.

The Dithmarschen Goose Market in Gudendorf is described as a market hall offering specialities centred around goose, fresh poultry, and seasonal opportunities to see freshly hatched chicks. It also includes a featherbed workshop, a dining area, and a garden café. Freshly prepared poultry dishes and homemade cakes are served there.

Getting Around

There is a car park at the end of Vierthstraße; from there, a short footpath leads to the memorial. Bus 2507 runs from Meldorf railway station to Gudendorf Ortsmitte, followed by an approximately ten-minute walk.

Bus 2571 runs between St. Michaelisdonn and Barlt via Gudendorf. In Dithmarschen, there are signposted cycle routes designed as circular tours with flexible starting and ending points.
