Water and Nature

Wollersum is part of Groven and has a natural bathing area on the Eider, where an Eider harbour was once located. The bathing area is used by swimmers from the neighbouring villages. As part of a renovation project, the route from the old bathing jetty to the Eider was shortened by half.

Groven has areas within the Natura 2000 management plan area Untereider Nordfeld to Tönning. The Natura 2000 area associated with Groven encompasses Eider waters, mudflats, wet grassland, floodplain areas, ditches and small bodies of water. The protected Untereider area is an important resting, moulting and breeding ground for numerous waders and waterfowl.

Fishing permits are available for the club waters at Lunden/Lehe near Nesserdeich and Wollersum.

History and Water Management

Groven’s five districts were merged into one municipality in 1936. The Nesserdeich pumping station stands directly beside the watercourse behind the Eider dike. It drains the land west of the old B 5 from Lundener Koog to Rehm-Flehde-Bargen and Hemme.

The former Wollersum ferry landing had a wooden jetty. Its remaining piles can still be seen in the Eider when the water level is exceptionally low.

Landscape and Cycling

Groven forms part of the Eider river landscape in Dithmarschen. This is described as a region connected by the Eider, comprising geest, marshland, moorland and forest.

The Eider landscape is characterised by extensive meadows, moors, small valleys, pumping stations, thatched-roof houses, stork nests, hedgerows and sheep on the Eider dike. Dithmarschen has more than 1,200 kilometres of signposted cycle paths between the North Sea, the Elbe, the Eider and the Kiel Canal. Wollersum is a stop on the cycle route Experience the Cultural and River Landscape.

Regional Cuisine
