Barlt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Barlt is home to the protected St. Mary’s church complex. It includes the furnishings, the bell tower, the churchyard and graves dating from before 1870. The fully preserved roof structure of St. Mary’s Church dates from 1458 and is described as one of the oldest dated roof structures in Schleswig-Holstein. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Barlt can then continue their search for accommodation.

The Ursula windmill is a gallery Dutch windmill built in 1875. It has a fantail, two sets of millstones, a motor drive, shuttered sails and a complete wheat mill. It is not currently used for milling, can only be viewed from the outside and has a rural ice cream café. Barlt also served as a filming location for the television adaptation of Hans Fallada’s “Farmers, Bosses and Bombs”.

Museums

The Dithmarschen museum landscape brings together 19 museums at 11 locations. The Frenssen House in Barlt is part of this museum landscape. The Frenssen House preserves furnishings that illustrate middle-class domestic culture in the 1920s and 1930s. The house was Gustav Frenssen’s birthplace, residence and place of death. Visits to the Frenssen House are possible by prior arrangement.

Landscape

The municipality of Barlt stretches from the Geest to the North Sea and is described as being framed by the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the Speicherkoog. Barlt’s historic centre developed as a linear settlement on marshland in connection with the first dike built to protect against the North Sea.

Regional Cuisine

Dithmarschen is known for cabbage as a regional product. At the same time, Dithmarschen is Europe’s largest contiguous cabbage-growing area; around 90 million heads of cabbage are grown there every year. In Dithmarschen, farm shops sell regional produce directly from the producers, including vegetables, meat and dairy products.

The Harmonie restaurant in Barlt is a listed brick building from 1897 with a two-storey hall and a wooden gallery. The Harmonie country inn offers regional cuisine and serves fish, meat, pasta and bowl dishes. The facilities also include a restaurant, function rooms and catering.

Routes

The flat marshland of Dithmarschen makes long bike tours possible, including the North Sea Cycle Route. Near Barlt, there is also the 9-kilometre circular hiking trail “From Donner Kleve to Gudendorfer Forest”. It starts and ends at the sports field in St. Michaelisdonn and follows the marsh–Geest boundary towards Gudendorfer Forest.
