The Rabenauer Grund offers a walk along the Rote Weißeritz, beside the historic narrow-gauge railway and past high rock formations along the route.
The Rabenauer Grund has been designated a nature reserve since 30 March 1961.
Culture
The German Chairmaking Museum is housed in the Vorwerk of the former Rabenau palace complex. It presents chairmaking, historical tools and woodworking machinery, as well as local history exhibitions and material on the Rabenauer Grund nature reserve. Traditional chairmaking is preserved and presented there. Rabenau has retained its status as a centre of traditional chairmaking in Saxony.
The museum offers specialised tours of the permanent exhibition and on the traditional production of wooden chairs, as well as tours for visitors with visual impairments, trainees, children and young people, senior citizens, and special exhibitions.
At the Rabenau Chairmakers’ Fountain, bronze figures of chairmakers depict a chairmaker father, a chairmaker mother and a chairmaker child. Until 1900, there were around 150 chairmaking workshops and 13 factories in Rabenau.
History
The Weißeritz Valley Railway is Germany’s oldest public narrow-gauge railway still operating on a scheduled service. Rabenau’s post-mile column has stood at its original location since 18 May 2013.
The Sagenhafter Mühlberg Adventure Trail includes a children’s memory game connected to the German Chairmaking Museum.
