Königstein Fortress showcases 400 years of fortress architecture. The complex includes more than 50 buildings and landscaped grounds. The IN LAPIDE REGIS exhibition presents 800 years of Königstein’s history through three-dimensional displays, lifelike figure installations and media stations. Interactive stations allow children to experience history in a playful way.
The Protestant Lutheran St. Mary’s Church in Königstein also combines different eras: its exterior is Baroque, while the interior is designed in the Neoclassical style. The present-day church building was reconsecrated in 1823 after a town fire destroyed the church in 1810. A post milestone in Königstein is connected with the development of the postal service under Augustus the Strong.
Nature
Visitors can walk from Königstein to Königstein Fortress along signposted forest paths in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. A route marked in blue leads via the Painters’ Way and includes numerous steps. A route marked in red runs via the Old Fortress Road or the Painters’ Way and is described as more comfortable.
The Painters’ Way is a long-distance hiking trail with eight stages in Saxon Switzerland that combines nature and culture. Saxon Switzerland National Park is a rocky landscape where visitors can experience nature away from the noise of traffic.
Getting Around
Cycling along the Elbe Cycle Route takes you past Königstein Fortress. Königstein Bicycle Garage is located near the Elbe Cycle Route, the ferry and the railway station; the eight lower boxes offer charging facilities for e-bikes. The bicycle garage also provides secure storage for bicycles and luggage while visiting the town and the fortress.
Königstein Fortress has step-free access via a lift. The town’s tourist information office provides assistance with accommodation, visitor advice, tickets for local public transport, steamer tickets, hiking maps, Forststeig trekking tickets and vouchers for Königstein Forest Climbing Park.
