Hohnstein: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Hohnstein lies among forests, rocks, old masonry and Elbe Sandstone landscapes. In the historic center, winding lanes run between half-timbered houses.

Landscape

The Gautschgrotte can be reached on foot from Hohnstein Market in about 15 minutes. Its rocky edge is 18 meters high; in freezing winters, the waterfall can form a large column of ice. The Napoleonschanze stands on the 392-meter-high granite summit of the Schanzenberg and offers a sweeping panorama of the region.

A hiking trail now runs along the route of the disused narrow-gauge railway through the Schwarzbach Valley; bridges, tunnels and remnants of the tracks have been preserved. The Schwarzbach Valley area is also associated with the ruins of Schwarzberg Castle, which is also called Goßdorfer Raubschloss.

History

Hohnstein Castle rises above Hohnstein and the Polenztal Valley on a high rock. The castle complex includes a viewing tower, a castle garden, a museum and historic cellars. The castle museum presents exhibitions on local and regional history, geology, flora and fauna. Hohnstein Castle is also a starting point for the Hohnstein nature trail.

Culture

The Hohnstein Kasper Trail commemorates Hohnstein’s puppet theater tradition and comprises eight stations featuring Kasper heads. The Max Jacob Theater Hohnstein presents puppet theater, cabaret, theater for adults, concerts, lectures and readings and can be reached by bus routes 235, 236, 237 and 254; from Hohnstein Eiche, a footpath takes about ten minutes.
