Schönwölkau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Schönwölkau showcases its historic character particularly clearly at Schönwölkau Castle and Park: the large Baroque four-wing complex with its adjoining service buildings is described as one of Saxony’s most significant Baroque castles. The local transport network includes a railway halt in Hohenroda and a railway station just beyond the municipal boundary near Krensitz. Trains operated by the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn stop at both locations every two hours. Federal Highway 2 also runs through Schönwölkau; from the A14, the municipality can be reached via the Leipzig-Mitte exit.

Culture

In the district of Badrina, the historic watermill is the oldest documented facility of its kind in the Delitzsch area. Visitors can also see a traditional rural smithy with historic furnishings and tools. The Old Smithy dates from the second half of the 18th century and preserves a structural core from the 15th century. For generations, it belonged to a family of master blacksmiths; until the 20th century, it was used as a horseshoe and wagon smithy.

In Hohenroda, the post mill has been open to visitors again since 1999. With prior registration, the oven at the post mill can be used for baking bread.

The village church in Mocherwitz has a Romanesque core and dates from the 11th century; it was altered in 1579 and 1720. The rendered fieldstone and rubble-stone building features half-timbered structures in the upper part of the tower and in the choir gable. The church has three bronze bells, including one from the 14th century and two from 1881. Inside are a baptismal font from 1600, a Baroque organ from 1721, and a wooden altar wall from 1892.

The village church in Brinnis has a Romanesque core, a choir extension from 1518, as well as a raised nave and a west portal from 1557. The rendered fieldstone and rubble-stone building has a three-sided choir, buttresses, and a rectangular west tower. Inside are a coffered plaster ceiling, single- and two-story galleries, and a net vault in the choir; most of the furnishings date from 1830.

Things to Do

Schönwölkau is integrated into a regional network of cycling paths. In northern Saxony, cycling, hiking, and sailing are supported by an extensive, signposted network of routes.
