Belgern-Schildau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

When looking for a holiday apartment to rent in Belgern-Schildau, your view extends from historic buildings and museums to Schildberg and paths through the Dahlen Heath.

Culture

The Renaissance town hall in the Belgern district dates from 1575 to 1578 and retains its original architectural form. A nearly six-metre-high Roland statue, carved from stone in 1610, stands by the town hall. The Belgern Roland is associated with judicial authority, market rights and minting rights.

In the Schildau district, the tower of St. Mary’s is older than the late Romanesque basilica, which was built around 1170. St. Mary’s contains a winged altar from the 15th century with carved scenes from the history of Jesus and the life of Mary.

The Gneisenau Monument was erected in Schildau’s market square in 1960 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Neidhardt von Gneisenau. Belgern-Schildau is home to the only Gneisenau memorial site in Saxony. The Schildbürger and Gneisenau Museum provides information about August Neidhart von Gneisenau and recounts the pranks of the Schildbürger.

Since 2004, the Belgern Town Museum has been located in the Alte Schmiede, one of the oldest house sites in the town. It covers the role of the Elbe in the local history as well as the development of crafts, agriculture, brewing, viticulture and markets. Next to the market square in Belgern stands a stone distance column commissioned by Augustus the Strong in 1730. In the Belgern district, the historic market square is surrounded by old town houses.

Landscape

Schildberg rises to 215 metres above sea level in the northwest of the Dahlen Heath and shapes the landscape of the Schildau district. Marked mixed-forest paths lead to Schildberg and are used for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Carriage rides to Schildberg are possible, including as an extension of a town tour.

Treblitzsch Landscape Park is known for its dendrological collections.
