Culture and History

The Church of Our Lady is a late Gothic hall church with a 62-metre-high tower and a Jeheber organ. Interior visits are possible by prior arrangement.

The Spittel Museum displays almost 5,000 objects that visitors are allowed to view and handle. In 17 rooms, it documents the working and living traditions of the Ore Mountains. The museum is located in a building erected in 1508, which is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town.

The Firefighting Museum opened in 1998 in the old fire station. Its exhibits include a hand pump from the year the fire brigade was founded, 1873, which is considered the museum’s oldest exhibit, as well as a motor pump from 1926, described as the fire brigade’s first.

The Adam Road Construction Machinery Museum displays a fully reconstructed steamroller from 1925. It is described as unique in Saxony; all parts are original.

The 25-metre-high water tower was built in 1893/94. It is a technical monument and landmark of the town, but can currently only be viewed from the outside.

Paths and Landscape

There are around 80 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails around Sayda. Several circular hiking routes cover approximately 6 to 29 kilometres, including routes through Mortelgrund, Kreuztanne and Seiffen, as well as towards the Rauschenbach and Fláje reservoirs.

The Sayda Painters’ Trail features 22 illustrated panels showing artists’ motifs and related information. The Kammweg 07 leads via Kreuztanne, the Obere Vorwerk, the Salt Road and the Schwemmteiche ponds before returning to Sayda. It also meets the family-friendly Blockline cycling route.

The Sayda/Kreuztanne–Seiffen stage of the Erzgebirgstrail crosses the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park and offers wide views over hills and valleys.

Winter and Sports

The Cäm3 Museum presents skiing, technology and history in an exhibition area of 800 square metres. It also offers weather-independent biathlon activities, including sprinting and shooting at targets.

In winter, Sayda has around 45 kilometres of prepared cross-country ski trails and a drag lift on the Mortelgrund ski slope. The offering is weather-dependent.

Mill and Regional Tradition

The Mittelmühle in Sayda’s district of Friedebach is a former grain and oil mill. By prior telephone arrangement, the production of Ore Mountain linseed oil can be demonstrated there.

Surroundings

The Aktivland Erzgebirge area covers approximately 220 square kilometres and extends across six municipalities. It promotes hiking, cycling, recreation and leisure in a scenic natural setting.
