Neuhausen/Erzgeb.: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Purschenstein Castle was built in the mid-13th century as a customs and escort castle on a rocky promontory above the Flöha River. The structure preserves a 42-metre-high keep and remnants of a medieval outer bailey. For anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment, the castle, museums, hiking trails and the Schwartenberg are therefore the key local features of Neuhausen/Erzgeb.

Culture

Neuhausen Church was rebuilt in the Gothic style between 1863 and 1868 after a major fire. Today, regular church services and concerts take place there. The Purschenstein Bird Wedding ensemble takes centre stage; with Purschenstein Castle in the background, it forms a local photographic motif. The pyramid at Wenzelplatz features traditional figures from the Ore Mountains, including nutcrackers, Father Christmas and figures from the Christmas story.

The Nutcracker Museum complex includes a shop selling original Ore Mountain folk art products. The Neuhausen Nutcracker Museum displays 4,400 nutcrackers from 30 countries; the oldest pieces date from the 17th century. The museum also displays the world’s largest functioning wooden nutcracker, standing 10.10 metres tall. The Neuhausen museum complex also includes the "Alte Stuhlfabrik" Technical Museum.

The Glassworks Museum presents an 800-year history of glassmaking in the Ore Mountains, including the historic Heidelbach glassworks and glass made for the Saxon court. The museum is currently temporarily closed.

Nature and trails

Rauschenbach Reservoir can be circumnavigated on hiking trails. The hiking area around Neuhausen/Erzgeb. offers well-signposted hiking trails and a selection of circular routes. The approximately 8-kilometre hike “Around Purschenstein Castle” is of moderate difficulty, passes the castle and offers views of Neuhausen. The 9.5-kilometre hike “Through the Mertzengrund to Dittersbach” follows streams and forests before reaching views of Neuhausen and the Ore Mountain ridge.

The Neuhausen Panorama Trail leads to several viewpoints around Neuhausen and can be adapted as a winter hike. The 27-kilometre tour “High up to the Ore Mountain ridge” can also be completed by bicycle after the Schwartenberg via an alternative section.

Winter and cycling

The 789-metre-high Schwartenberg is Neuhausen’s local mountain and a viewpoint in the Ore Mountains, offering views towards Freiberg and Augustusburg in good visibility. It is associated with hiking, skiing and tobogganing and is described as a hotspot for hang-gliding and paragliding.

The tourist information office in Neuhausen provides information on sights, excursions, restaurants, bus and rail connections, hiking trails and cycling tours, and offers information about the Ore Mountains–Vogtland Ridgeway. On the ridgeway stage between Sayda and Seiffen, Neuhausen’s Glassworks Museum, Purschenstein Castle, Nutcracker Museum and Schwartenberg are named as landmarks.
