A prominent testament to Halsbrücke’s mining history is the mining canal, which includes a 12-metre-high boat lift house built in 1785 and described as Europe’s first ship lift.
Culture
The historic Halsbrücke smelting site included a smelting works documented in 1612. From 1791 to 1857, an amalgamation plant for processing silver ore operated here. The Rote Graben was artificially constructed in 1612/13 to carry water for mining in Halsbrücke. In 1815, the Halsbrücke amalgamation plant was equipped with Europe’s first gas lighting system.
Tuttendorf is home to St. Anne’s Church with an Oehme organ; it originated from a pilgrimage chapel. St. Catherine’s Church in Oberschaar preserves the altarpiece “22. Christ on the Cross”, created around 1650 and once used by pilgrims for devotion.
Halsbrücke’s visitor-oriented industrial heritage includes the 140-metre-high Hohe Esse, the Altväterbrücke and the Rothschönberger Stolln with numerous light shafts and mining spoil heaps.
Landscape
The Niederschöna strata are associated with sandstone quarries that have been worked for more than 800 years, as well as with fossils of Cretaceous plants and marine animals. The Grabentour runs through the Bobritzsch Landscape Protection Area and offers views of historic evidence of silver mining.
Things to Do
An 8.7-kilometre circular hike of moderate difficulty in Halsbrücke follows the mining and smelting heritage along the Freiberger Mulde. Its stops include the Altväterbrücke, the Erzkanal, the Halsbrücker Rösche, the Rote Graben and the 7th and 8th light shafts of the Rothschönberger Stolln.
The above-ground facilities of the VII Light Shaft can be visited on special occasions. On the Freiberg–Halsbrücke cycle route, a cycle path runs along the former railway line near the former Halsbrücke railway station. The Tour de Lichtloch Süd mainly follows asphalted roads that are usually lightly trafficked, with some exceptions.
