The Gottfried Silbermann Museum presents the life and work of the organ builder, his family and musical environment, as well as the principles of organ building. The centrepiece is a true-to-the-original copy of the Silbermann organ from Etzdorf; the history of Frauenstein is covered in the basement. Frauenstein Castle Ruins and this museum are described as part of the town centre. The municipal information office can arrange guided tours of the museum, the ruins, the town and hiking trails.
Frauenstein Castle Ruins were built around 1200 during the settlement of the area on behalf of the Margrave of Meissen. From 1 May to 31 October, the ruins are open to visitors subject to weather conditions; admission tickets are issued at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum.
Concert series featuring international and regional artists take place at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum, Frauenstein Town Church and Nassau Village Church. The Friends of Frauenstein Castle association offers adventure tours covering the age of knights and robbers, including tours with the castle ghost “Vrouwin” for younger visitors.
The village church in the Nassau district houses a Gottfried Silbermann organ dating from 1746–1747, which was restored in 1998 and is described as being in very good condition.
Frauenstein and the Nassau district bear the designation of state-recognised recreational resort.
Activities
In the Nassau district of Frauenstein, the fitness trail offers a family-oriented outdoor activity.
The circular “Silbermann Frauenstein Nassau” trail is described as unsuitable for bicycles and pushchairs. It passes the Röthenhübel viewpoint, which offers a view of the Ore Mountains. In the directories, the circular trail is listed as 15.6 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of four hours.
The Talsperre-Lichtenberg–Schillermühlenweg circular hike leads from Frauenstein via Burkersdorf to the pre-reservoir of the Lichtenberg Dam and returns along natural paths beside the Gimmlitz.
Landscape
The FND Schlosspark Frauenstein is a protected area of approximately two hectares, located 150 metres north of Frauenstein and adjoining the castle wall. It lies at the transition between nutrient-poor granite porphyry and adjacent gneiss and has developed into a near-natural mixed beech forest with sycamore maple, ash and wych elm. Numerous hiking trails cross the area.
