Werdau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At the Werdau Town and Steam Engine Museum, a town model shows Werdau in 1628 with its town hall, castle, St. Mary’s Church and town wall. A 600-hp steam engine from 1899 stands at its original location and is described as one of Saxony’s most valuable industrial monuments. The museum grounds feature an accessible steam storage locomotive and a miniature railway at a scale of 1:20, with more than 300 metres of track. The museum also houses the largest collection of Fraureuth porcelain. Archaeological evidence documents the origins of Werdau there around 1200.

Culture

The Werdau Nativity Trail can only be visited during the Christmas season. The historic city tour leads across the market square and past preserved remains of the town wall. It visits the foundations of St. Giles’ Church, built around 1170 and demolished around 1629. The tour also includes part of the former Werdau Castle, a historic arcade and a vaulted cellar. Historic city tours for visits between May and October can be booked through the Werdau Museum. In Werdau, guided tours of the town hall are available and usually last between one and one and a half hours.

Nature

The Flößergraben nature trail extends for 5.5 kilometres in each direction from Leubnitz to the Waldmannsruh forest restaurant. It begins on Trünziger Straße at the end of Leubnitz-Forst; parking is available near the forest barrier. The trail runs entirely through the state forest managed by Sachsenforst. Guided landscape tours along the Flößergraben explain the history of timber rafting on the Pleiße and tell stories about the forest, fields, wild animals and the raftsman Ole.

In Werdau’s Leubnitz district, Werdau Forest offers opportunities for recreation, including walks around Rohrteich, Stauweiher and Elferteich. In Werdau’s Steinpleis district lies the Römertal area, a forest and meadow valley with breeding grounds for rare marsh birds and protected plants. The Greiz-Werdau Forest protected landscape area has numerous paths for walking and hiking; many of these paths also serve as cycling and riding trails. A circular hiking trail runs nearby, directly along the Koberbach Reservoir.

WEBALU is an indoor and outdoor swimming complex in Werdau with a sauna area. It includes swimming pools, children’s and baby pools, an outdoor bathing area, a slide and a waterfall. Activities offered include aqua fitness, aqua jogging, water aerobics, rehabilitation sports, baby swimming and swimming courses. WEBALU offers free parking, a caravan pitch, charging facilities for e-bikes and electric cars, a shop and barrier-free access.

The beach resort at the Koberbach Reservoir has a snack bar, beach volleyball and table tennis. It also features a long sandy beach, anchored bathing islands and a large sunbathing lawn. In Werdau’s Langenhessen district, the Koberbach Reservoir offers water sports, hiking, fishing and camping.

The Pleiße Cycle Path is an approximately 110-kilometre-long route that is predominantly asphalted or paved and is suitable for families and recreational cyclists. It runs south towards Werdau; the Steam Engine Museum in Werdau is listed as a stop along the route.
