Landscape and Townscape

Remse is predominantly characterised by a spacious small-town and rural development pattern. The townscape includes detached buildings and multi-sided farmsteads.

History and Churches

Remse’s central historic landmark is Roter Stock. The visible remains of the former Benedictine monastery of Roter Stock are considered a tourist attraction; the building is the only surviving one from the medieval monastery. It presumably incorporates the Romanesque westwerk of the former three-aisled monastery church and stands directly opposite a single-aisled Romanesque church.

The church in Remse was first mentioned in the mid-13th century and was later extensively restored inside; the floors were also relaid during this work. Visitors are welcome to attend services or special events in Remse’s small village churches.

The monastery was formally dissolved during the Reformation around 1533. After its dissolution, the monastery and its property belonged to the Lords of Schönburg and continued to be used as their manor house.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The Remse Bastei is a viewpoint above the Mulde Valley. The Luther Trail in Saxony passes through Remse on the section from Waldenburg to Glauchau; the trail is marked with a green L on a white background.

Remse is a waypoint on the Glauchau–Rochlitz section of the Mulderadweg, an easy cycling route of approximately 43.5 kilometres along the Zwickauer Mulde. The Muldental Hiking Trail is associated with a natural and scenic landscape along the Mulde.
