Culture and History

The museum at Schönfels Castle presents the history of the castle and medieval life. Schönfels Castle also hosts exhibitions, educational museum programs, concerts, and markets.

Schönfels Castle is a medieval castle complex in the Schönfels district and a starting point for circular hikes or cycling tours. Its tower offers views over the surrounding landscape. The castle was built in the 12th century at an altitude of 393 meters on a spur of diabase rock.

Schönfels was established around 1200, while Schönfels Castle served as the administrative center of the Lordship of Rode. St. Barbara is a simple hall church in the rural early Baroque style.

The historic Rußbuttensteig connects Lichtentanne and Schönfels. Historically, it served as a transport route for soot, which was produced in nearby soot furnaces and pitch huts and transported toward Leipzig.

Hiking and Cycling

Lichtentanne has signposted cycling routes in all its districts. The Pleiße Cycle Path is described as a relatively easy ride, particularly suitable for families and recreational cyclists. Most of the Pleiße Cycle Path is paved or surfaced.

Nature

The Pleiße rises at the Drei-Linden-Brunnen spring in a small park in Ebersbrunn, which invites visitors to linger.
