Culture and History
Oberau Moated Castle preserves a moat, scroll gables, and old sandstone door and window surrounds. It is one of the oldest surviving castles of its kind in Germany. Guided tours of the Oberau castle grounds include the park and the Weinhäusel with two cellars described as being almost 500 years old.
The Oberau Tunnel Monument was relocated in 1933/34 using the original material from the tunnel portal. It is an important monument to railway history and of great historical significance.
St. James's Church in Niederau was completely rebuilt in 1878 after earlier alterations. During the 1973 renovation, Werner Juza created the altarpiece mural. It depicts a large, cross-shaped representation of the Last Judgment with six scenes illustrating the works of mercy. Groups visit the church to discuss the artistic and theological aspects of this painting.
Niederau railway station is still in operation and is described as Germany's oldest railway station. Its inauguration took place on 15 May. Johann Gottlieb Fichte is connected with Niederau through his childhood stay there: he spent several years in the village before being prepared for schooling in Meißen.
