Käbschütztal combines culture, nature, trails and regional history in a rural setting. Historic buildings, geological outcrops and signposted routes give the area a variety of facets.
Culture
The sights include the Evangelical Lutheran churches in Krögis and Planitz, the Löthain Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum, the Park of Generations in Niederjahna and the “Glückauf-Schacht” Mining Museum in Mehren. The rural heritage is reflected in manor houses as well as preserved four-sided and three-sided farmsteads. The Rittergut Barnitz Museum displays historic furnishings and a small polytechnic cabinet.
The mining of clay and kaolin contributed to the development of ceramic industries; kaolin from Seilitz was used to manufacture porcelain.
Nature
Parts of Käbschütztal are included in the “Täler südöstlich Lommatzsch” FFH area. The FFH area contains the “Ketzer- und Käbschützbachtal” section.
North of the village pond in Leutewitz, a former quarry exposes approximately 20 metres of rhyolite. The Leutewitz quarry displays large columns there with varying inclinations. A smaller geological outcrop near Käbschütz station shows horizontal layering alongside a porphyritic volcanic texture.
Trails
The former narrow-gauge railway embankment between Meißen-Triebischtal and Lommatzsch was converted into a cycling and hiking trail. The geological trail in Leutewitz is rated easy and runs for 2 kilometres in one direction.
By car, it can be reached from exit 37 Nossen-Ost on the A14 via the B 101 to Krögis and then via the K8031 to the village pond in Leutewitz. By public transport, the trail can be reached via the S1 from Dresden Central Station to Meißen and bus 417 to Leutewitz Gutshof.
Wine
The Käbschütztal circular trail offers views across the Lommatzscher Pflege hill country, passes the park and pond of the Sornitz castle complex, includes a stop at Mauna Vineyard and is listed as approximately 15.3 kilometres long; an additional distance of 17.7 kilometres is also given. Organic winegrowing has been practised at Mauna Vineyard since 2019, and visitors can take a break at a wine tavern at the stop.
