Culture and History

Trebsen’s stone church was built around 1150 as a three-aisled basilica. The Judithstein gravestone is considered one of the oldest Romanesque gravestones in Saxony. The church’s ceiling painting depicts the Ascension of the Prophet Elijah and dates from 1701. A sundial at the church, created before 1800, was reconstructed in 1975 and guides travelers along the Luther Trail.

St. Johannis in Altenhain, a district of Trebsen, was built in 1787 as a Neoclassical hall church with a square west tower. Original men’s seats from 1755 have been preserved in the church’s second gallery. The Eule organ in Trebsen’s town church was donated in 1926.

Trebsen Castle stands on the western bank of the Mulde and is a four-winged late Gothic complex. The ground floor contains characteristic cellular vaults, which can also be seen in the restaurant. Jazz and blues events at Trebsen Manor regularly form part of the regional cultural landscape.

Nature

Trebsen’s rocky natural character is associated with its location in the Porphyland Geopark and with volcanic eruptions that occurred 290 million years ago. The Geo-Adventure Workshop at Trebsen Manor presents an exhibition of regional minerals and stones. During events, visitors can cut gemstones or prisms and learn blacksmithing techniques.

Cycling and Water

The Mulde Cycle Path through Trebsen passes the town church, the manor, and Trebsen Castle with its adjoining park. Paddlers can launch at the Neichen weir and take their boats out at Trebsen Castle.

The 45.6-kilometer Mulde–Elbe Cycle Tour begins at the market square in Trebsen and leads to the Elbe near Strehla, where it connects with the Elbe Cycle Path. The first section from Trebsen is not signposted; a map is needed there to follow the route.

Getting There

To arrive by public transport, take RE50 to Wurzen or RB110 to Grimma, and then bus 693 to Trebsen (Mulde), Markt.
