Nature

The Kleiner Berg Hohburg Georoute starts and ends at the Geoportal Steinarbeiterhaus Hohburg Museum in Hohburg, a district of Lossatal. In Hohburg, it passes two kaolin lakes; kaolin was mined there until 1965. The Kaolinsee lake at the foot of Kleiner Berg is a former open-pit mine with a water surface of ten hectares. The Hohburg Hills have a network of marked hiking trails between the rock formations near Gaudlitzberg, Spielberg and Holzberg. There are also climbing routes on walls up to 40 metres high. Former quarries in the Lossatal area have been used as climbing areas since the 1920s. Former kaolin mining lakes with surrounding lawns are used for summer recreation, while ski and toboggan slopes provide additional winter activities. A bicycle rest area is located opposite the ice cream café.

Culture and History

The Kühnitzsch post mill was built in 1812 and is still fully operational. Visitors can learn about milling there and how grain is turned into flour. Private tours of the post mill are offered for guests and groups.

The Steinarbeiterhaus Hohburg Museum is dedicated to the development of the stone industry and the everyday life of quarry workers. It is housed in a largely unchanged property dating from 1802; local history enthusiasts opened the museum in 1985. In Frauwalde, a district of Lossatal, the Museum of Prehistory and Early History presents the area's approximately 7,000-year settlement history. Two Bronze Age burial mound fields near Frauwalde have been dated to approximately 1400 to 900 BC.

Thammenhain Castle, a former medieval moated castle, has a projecting Renaissance gable and a tower on the south side. A broad, two-flight terrace at Thammenhain Castle offers views across the castle park. The Dornreichenbach open-air theatre presents fairy-tale performances for children and adults. Traditional village, harvest and fishermen's festivals in Lossatal bring local customs and traditional crafts to life.

Local Attractions

The Dornreichenbach Animal Enclosure offers a walk through a landscaped castle park covering approximately 5.5 hectares. Around 54 animal species can be observed there, including several endangered species. The Gasthof Stern in Thammenhain, a district of Lossatal, has been serving regional and seasonal dishes as well as traditional German home cooking since 1981.
