Culture

Wilhelm Ostwald Park houses a permanent exhibition on Wilhelm Ostwald’s life and work in the rooms where he worked at Haus Energie. The collection of the Grimma Museum has its roots in the 1900 antiques exhibition and has continued to evolve into the present day. The Göschenhaus Museum is currently closed for renovation work, which is expected to continue until 2027.

The preserved section of Grimma’s town wall dates from the first third of the 13th century and features small garden houses on the remaining section of the wall. The monastery church of the Augustinian Hermits is part of the Grimma town tour, was built around 1430 and retains its historic tracery windows. Martin Luther preached several times in Grimma’s monastery church.

The Stone Mulde Bridge, also known as the Pöppelmann Bridge, is a landmark of Grimma. When crossing the Pöppelmann Bridge on foot, visitors can enjoy views of the old town skyline, the Gothic castle gable, the monastery church and St. Augustin Grammar School.

The Schiffmühle Höfgen technical museum presents exhibitions on hydropower and the environment, the history and use of the mill, and the cultural history of Central European river ship mills. It offers a tour lasting approximately 45 minutes, which can be booked during opening hours or by prior arrangement.

Trails and Landscape

The Grimma suspension bridge spans the Mulde for 80 metres and connects the town area with the municipal park on the opposite bank. The Way of the Stones Grimma is an easy themed hiking route covering 8.29 kilometres. It begins at Grimma’s Pöppelmann Bridge, leads via Rabenstein and Höfgen, and continues along the Mulde to Förstgen. The route includes 28 stone stations, including signposts, stone seats, information boards and sculptures.

Geographical Location

Grimma lies on the Mulde and is surrounded by gentle hills. From Leipzig, the town can be reached by train or S-Bahn as far as Borsdorf; from there, the regional train RB110 continues to Grimma station.

Grimma is a starting point for exploring the wider Leipzig region, including excursions to Leipzig, Torgau and the Leipzig Neuseenland lake district.
