The Erlichthof settlement in Rietschen was established in the early 1990s, when historic wooden houses were relocated from the area preceding the open-cast mine. It comprises an ensemble of historic wooden houses and a farmers’ museum. There is also a wolf museum, exhibitions, guided tours, and traditional workshops. Traditional events held annually include a pottery market, a wood and forest festival, a nature and fishing festival, and the Wichtel Festival.

The Rietschen Fire Brigade Museum documents the history of the volunteer fire brigade from 1945 to 1989. On display are historic rescue equipment, protective clothing, and an original Robur Garant K30 fire engine. Advance registration by telephone is required for a visit.

Cycling

Nine circular tours, ranging from 26 to 65 kilometers in length, start at Erlichthof Rietschen; they lead through the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. The 45-kilometer Wolfsradweg cycle path runs through the municipality of Rietschen between the Spree Cycle Path and the Neisse Cycle Path. The Forest Village Ranch is located along this cycle path and is described as a destination for short excursions. The ranch features an authentic Western-style setting, a wooden playground, and a herd of bison.

Nature

The Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve is Germany’s largest pond region and is characterized by ponds alongside sand dunes. At the Wolf Barn at Erlichthof, visitors can find nature films, an exhibition, and an outdoor themed experience area about European gray wolves.

Rietschen offers carriage rides, horseback rides, a riding station, and riding courses. The small lake at the Schenkteich recreation area in Hammerstadt is used for swimming by residents and visitors.

Rietschen can be reached via Federal Highway 115 between Cottbus and Görlitz. A train station is located in the town center on the Berlin–Görlitz railway line; free parking is available there. Local buses also run regularly.
