Großschweidnitz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Höllgrund is a steep valley section approximately 900 metres long along the Großschweidnitzer Wasser, with diverse woodland and species-rich ground flora. A marked hiking trail leads through the Höllgrund between Großschweidnitz and Dürrhennersdorf. Nature

Großschweidnitz extends along the valley floor of the Großschweidnitzer Wasser from the Höllengrund to the border with Kleinschweidnitz. The valley around Großschweidnitz is described as a wooded valley cut into a local granite massif. The Löbauer Wasser in the Höllgrund is recorded as a natural, summer-cold mountain stream with statutory protection.

The Löbau–Rumburg road, built in 1828/29, and the Löbau–Zittau railway line, opened in 1848, were significant for the location of the village.

Culture

The church, completed in 1904, is described as a distinctive feature of Großschweidnitz's village scene. The village scene is prominently marked by the hospital complex, the estate buildings of two former manors, the railway viaduct and the Duncan Villa.

The Großschweidnitz Village Museum opened in summer 2015 and presents an exhibition on the linen industry of Großschweidnitz. The village museum also opens for village highlights such as Easter, the Christmas market, the club festival and the village festival. Further visits to the village museum can be arranged in advance through the municipal administration.

History

Duncan's linen industry was founded by Sir William Duncan in 1869/70. The former sanatorium and care facility was built in pavilion style on a site of approximately 30 hectares. The former hospital buildings stand in a largely unenclosed park landscape.

An information system guides visitors across the grounds of the former cemetery at the Großschweidnitz Memorial. The memorial exhibition addresses the background, implementation and consequences of the murders of patients in Großschweidnitz.
