Groß Düben: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Groß Düben can then continue searching for accommodation. The two bodies of water represent different aspects of the area: Waldsee combines swimming and leisure activities with the history of a former lignite mine, while the larger Halbendorfer See was created from an open-cast mine dating from the 1960s and the subsequent reclamation after mining ended.

Lakes and Water

Waldsee is approximately 380 metres long, 160 metres wide and 13 to 15 metres deep. It was created from the former “Sophie” lignite mine, is used for swimming and fishing, and is part of the Lusatian Lakeland. Waldsee is described as Saxony’s northeasternmost bathing lake. The site has a volleyball court, a bowling alley, an outdoor table tennis table and a children’s playground. Six flat-roofed bungalows and a villa offer overnight accommodation at Waldsee.

Halbendorfer See covers around 120 hectares and is up to 27 metres deep. It is associated with paddling, rowing, canoeing, sailing, surfing, diving, electric and pedal boating, water skiing, wakeboarding and AquaPark activities.

Landscape and Trails

Part of the recreational area at Halbendorfer See lies within a landscape conservation area. Some sections of the lake and shore are reserved for nature conservation and are accessible only on foot or by bicycle.

The international Frog Cycle Route runs through Halbendorf. It passes landscapes with diverse flora and fauna and leads to sights in the surrounding area.

Culture and History

Halbendorf is an incorporated district within the municipality, associated with Halbendorfer See, the annual Neptune Festival and the Sorbian Easter Egg Festival. The village was first mentioned in official records in 1597 under the old Sorbian name Breslug; its current Sorbian name is Brezowka.
