Nature

Schwepnitz borders directly on the Königsbrück Heath, a protected area described as Saxony’s largest contiguous nature reserve. Near the Altes Dorf Heath Trail, the protected area’s management zone preserves an extensive dry heath covered with heather.

The Altes Dorf Heath Trail lies between Schmorkau and Schwepnitz, where the nature reserve and nature experience area meet. The trail reveals traces of historic beekeeping and sheep farming. Guided bus tours in the Königsbrück Heath lead into the otherwise inaccessible wilderness area.

Trails and Landscape

Cycling and hiking are permitted year-round on designated visitor trails in the Königsbrück Heath. Areas with access restrictions are marked with signs and continuous barriers. The Walschken Trail is approximately 4 kilometres long and lies north of Schwepnitz. A visit along the designated trails in the Königsbrück Heath can take around three hours on foot or by bicycle.

Schwepnitz remains surrounded by forest; the Green Valley offers a view towards Gottschdorf and Keulenberg.

Culture and History

A park was laid out at the castle in Schwepnitz before the building was constructed as the New Castle in 1848. Since 2019, visitors have been able to view the reconstruction of the castle in Schwepnitz. The lime-tree avenue leading to the castle preserves old trees.

The stone church in Schwepnitz dates from 1747. Its altar came from Reichenbach, the present organ was installed in 1867, and the present tower was added in 1886.

The Cosel Experience Farm includes a historic bakehouse with a clay oven and old equipment from former rural life. The farm also offers hands-on activities such as baking bread, trying out a washboard and solving a tree puzzle.

The Cosel Poorhouse presents a large collection of animals and birds. The ecosystems of forest and field are displayed in exhibition cases. The forest education room at the Cosel Poorhouse includes a large Wimmer picture and enables visitors to examine cells under microscopes.

The Energy Discovery Trail is a 10-kilometre route with seven stations. Along it, visitors can see and experience how energy is generated.
