Elterlein developed along the historic Salt Road between Halle and Prague. The Barbara Uttmann monument stands in the market square, which is located on a plateau above the surrounding valleys of the Schlangenbach and Schwarzbach streams.

Elterlein’s district of Schwarzbach includes the European bird sanctuary at Richterwald and the Schwarzbach Valley natural monument. A bison enclosure is one of the local visitor attractions there.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The “Around Hermannsdorf” hiking trail offers views of the peaks of the Upper Ore Mountains. The “Great Panoramic Round Elterlein” is a hike with numerous panoramic views of the ridge mountains. It leads via Schatzenstein, Friedrich-August-Höhe, Elterlein and Hermannsdorf.

In the surrounding area, signposted hiking and cycling trails lead from Elterlein’s district of Schwarzbach to the organ pipes on Scheibenberg, Schwarzenberg Castle and the visitor mine in Waschleithe. In the surrounding area, Schlettau Castle and Geyer can be reached on foot from Elterlein’s district of Hermannsdorf.

Bus route 441 runs directly through Elterlein and has a stop at the market square.
