Bärenstein: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Bärenstein lies at the foot of the 898-metre-high mountain of the same name and within the UNESCO World Heritage Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. The town is one of the traditional holiday and recreational destinations of the Upper Ore Mountains. Nature

Bärenstein is a mountain covered by basalt. Its basalt cover is an erosional remnant of a Tertiary lava flow. An abandoned basalt quarry is located on the north-western side of Bärenstein. The observation tower on Bärenstein was built in 1913 together with an accommodation house and is associated with panoramic views across the Upper Ore Mountains.

Things to Do

Bärenstein is one of the nine peaks on the 162-kilometre Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike tour. The mountain is also one of the eight peaks on the 285-kilometre Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland long-distance hiking trail. Bärenstein borders the Saxon and Bohemian ski resorts on the Fichtelberg and Klínovec.

Culture and History

The Willi Ski Jump on Bärenstein was built in 1921 and inaugurated on 25 February 1923. At the time, it was considered Saxony’s steepest ski jump; the last jump at the Willi Ski Jump took place in the winter of 1959.

The historic Bärenstein border marker stands directly on the border and symbolises open borders in the European Union with the message “Free passage”. It was restored and reinstalled at its current location in November 2025.

Local Life

Since 2013, the Gemeinsame Mitte pavilion has hosted exhibitions and book readings. Gemeinsame Mitte also organises a joint German-Czech Christmas market with Vejprty, as well as a Saxon-Bohemian beer festival every June. The Bohemian Brewery in Bärenstein was founded in 1858 by the brewer Wenzel Kuhn & Son from Vejprty.

Everyday Life

The Bärenstein municipal library offers more than 6,000 items for loan. It also provides digital access to an online lending service for e-books and audiobooks.
