Salt and History
In the Bad Salzelmen district, Schönebeck (Elbe) preserves the city’s salt-making history through its historic saltworks tradition, practical demonstrations of salt boiling at the Kunsthof Bad Salzelmen, and the Salzland Museum.
On the banks of the Elbe, the salt storage houses form a 133-metre-long inhabited half-timbered ensemble. The Salt Tower is 37 metres high and was once part of Schönebeck’s medieval salt gate. Inside, there is a gallery with changing exhibitions. A balustrade 30 metres above the ground offers views in all four directions over Schönebeck’s rooftops.
The Salt Flower is a 16-metre-high landmark made of iron and stainless steel on the banks of the Elbe. The Kunsthof Bad Salzelmen includes the graduation tower, the brine tower, the demonstration saltworks, and a small exhibition area in the Red House. Regular guided tours provide insights into the city’s history of salt, brine, and spa treatments.
Routes and Excursions
The Elbe Cycle Route leads directly to Schönebeck on both sides of the Elbe. From the Schönebeck/Bad Salzelmen station, a hiking trail leads directly to Bierer Berg via the graduation tower, Tannenwäldchen, and Kastanienallee.
Bierer Berg Wildlife Park offers animal enclosures, an adventure and children’s playground, a café, and an open-air stage.
Landscape and the Elbe
The area around Schönebeck includes floodplain and lake landscapes east of the Elbe. There are opportunities for cycling, camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, and experiencing nature.
Boat trips on the Elbe depart from Marco Polo’s mooring next to Salzblumenplatz. The offerings include panoramic, coffee, moonlight, and day trips.
