Egeln: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Egeln, the moated castle is located directly behind the town centre and is signposted. The museum is housed in the gatehouse and keep of a moated castle dating from the 12th century. Its collections cover the settlement history of the Egelner Mulde, Egeln’s later history, everyday life around 1930, and the medieval history of the castle. Visitors can climb the 36-metre-high keep and arrange themed tours or night watchman tours.

Culture and History

Egeln Moated Castle consists of an upper castle and a lower castle, which were formerly separated by moats. Large sections of the surrounding zwinger wall and two round wall towers have been preserved. The keep integrated into Egeln Moated Castle dates from the 13th century. The palas was built around 1550 and received two sandstone Renaissance gables in 1617.

During the Thirty Years’ War, Egeln Moated Castle served at times as the headquarters of the Swedish army and as the residence of Field Marshal Johann Banér. The two Renaissance gables are described as rare examples because only a few Renaissance buildings of this type survived in Saxony-Anhalt after the Thirty Years’ War. The upper castle has an open-air theatre and includes a creative centre. The palas contains four castle-themed rooms for overnight stays. Additional tours of Egeln Moated Castle can be arranged outside regular opening hours.

The preserved Marienstuhl monastery church was built in 1732–34. Its Baroque interior dates from 1734–38 and contains sculptures from the Gothic predecessor church. The monastery church also contains a 2.50-metre-high crucifix dating from 1330. Guided tours of the monastery church are available by prior arrangement.

Cycling

The Bode Cycle Path runs for approximately 51 kilometres through the Salzland district along the Bode River, connecting floodplains, historic towns and villages. The route reaches Egeln via Egeln-Nord; it is generally well developed.

Between Egeln and Wolmirsleben, the Bode Cycle Path passes through a peaceful floodplain landscape with meadows, hedgerows and old oak trees. The Salzland district also has cycle paths along the Elbe, Saale and Bode rivers. They are complemented by themed circular routes and local trails focusing on nature, culture and history.
