Landscape

From the castle terrace, the panoramic view extends across the Saale Valley, the remaining floodplain forests and the foothills of the Harz Mountains. On very clear days, the Brocken can also be seen.

The Keßlerturm is a 26-metre-high observation tower dating from 1913. From there, the view extends across the Saale Valley and, on very clear days, as far as the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.

Culture

The keep of Bernburg Castle is 42 metres high and has walls 3.60 metres thick. It is the castle’s most imposing structure and landmark. The remains of the castle chapel of St Pankratius have also been preserved at Bernburg Castle; it was probably built in the 12th or 13th century.

St Aegidien Castle Church was first mentioned in 1375 as the parish church of Bernburg’s upper town. Later, it served as the church of the princes of Anhalt-Bernburg and as their burial place.

The Bernburg Castle Museum displays vessels from the Bernburg culture. Based on these exhibits, Alfred Götze coined the term Bernburg type in 1892 for a Neolithic civilisation located along the Saale. In total, the museum presents 243 million years of history, including dinosaur tracks, archaeological finds, the history of the residence, industrial culture and Till Eulenspiegel.

The Bernburg Court Theatre opened on 2 March 1827. The Carl Maria von Weber Theatre presents opera, operetta, musicals, concerts, theatre education, tragedies and comedies.

Nature

The tour of Bernburg Zoo is divided into the areas of Africa, Eurasia, Australia and America. Special attention is paid to the conservation breeding of endangered and rarely exhibited species. The zoo is home to more than 900 individual animals from around 125 wild species and domestic animal breeds and covers 8.5 hectares.

Getting Around

The Saale Cycle Route is a cycle path approximately 460 kilometres long. It runs from the source of the Saale near Zell in Bavaria to its mouth near Barby in Saxony-Anhalt. Near Bernburg, it runs from Alsleben via Gröna and a pedestrian bridge to Bernburg, and onward towards Wedlitz.

Many cycling routes begin and end at the office of the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park at Bernburg railway station. They provide access to the landscape and culture between Plötzkau, Bernburg and Nienburg. Many hiking trails also start and end at this office at Bernburg railway station; the Bernburg Saale Valley trail passes important monuments in the city.

Experiences

The “Paradise” Fairy-Tale Garden presents eleven Grimm fairy tales across more than 2,000 square metres. Pneumatically controlled figures move and speak. The grounds also include a beer garden and food and drink options.
