Leuna: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The garden city of Leuna is designated as a protected historic area and was built after the founding of Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) in 1916. A roughly 5 km-long small-town walking tour with eight attractions encompasses historical traces, modern architecture and the garden city’s green character.

Culture and History

Leuna is the namesake of the Rössen culture, a Neolithic cultural period dated approximately to between 4500 and 3500 BC. The term Rössen culture was introduced in 1900 following finds at the site of today’s Plastics Park in Leuna.

The ruins of St Nicholas Church in Rössen house a permanently accessible exhibition about the garden city of Leuna. The Christ the King Church stands on the eastern edge of the garden city and was designed in the New Objectivity style.

The building of Waldbad Leuna is described as an example of the Bauhaus style, featuring steel, concrete and glass. It was built in 1930–1931 and is considered a well-preserved example of a public swimming facility from the Weimar Republic era.

Routes and Landscape

The section of the Saale Cycle Route in Leuna is described as an idyllic, paved path that is easy to cycle along. It runs directly past the Leuna landing stage and the park with sculptures. The park encompasses a large, landscaped green area with shady meadows and named trees, including the Zöschen maple. It also presents a permanent collection of sculptures and reliefs from the Moritzburg Art Museum in Halle (Saale) as a multimedia experience.

A railway bridge on the Saale Cycle Route connects Leuna’s central town with the settlements in the Saale floodplain for pedestrians and cyclists. A footbridge from the Saale Cycle Route provides access to Waldbad, which is described as a summer destination for swimming and relaxation.

Connections

Leuna has road connections to the A9 and A38 motorways and to the B91 federal highway. A tram line connects Leuna with Halle (Saale), while Leipzig is described as accessible by car or train.
