Culture and History
The Schmid Shaft is named after the Mansfeld smelter Carl Friedrich Schmid. It dates from the 19th century and was sunk between 1844 and 1846 to a depth of 184 metres. Its headframe has been extensively restored. The Energy Experience Trail includes the Schmid Shaft as a station focusing on the use of energy in mining and smelting in the Mansfeld region. This station provides information about mining and smelting technology in the Mansfeld region.
The first area of the Copper Experience World is dedicated to the former August Bebel copper smelting works. The rock garden explains the working life of miners and presents the geology of the Mansfeld region at the second Copper Experience World site. An exhibition at the second Copper Experience World site provides detailed insights into Helbra’s history.

The Copper Experience World is accessible exclusively as part of a guided tour. Tours can be arranged by telephone, email, or via the website’s contact form. Visitors can see three original hoisting engines at the Schmid Shaft. The visit to the Schmid Shaft also includes an accessible copper smelting furnace.
Trails and Regional Connections
The Helbra–Siebigerode cycle link is 2,716.30 metres long. The route starts at the reconstructed Gartenheim railway crossing in Helbra and ends in Siebigerode. Until 1990, the Mansfeld Mining Railway transported intermediate products to and between the smelting works in Helbra and Hettstedt.
An observation platform at a height of 18 metres offers views across the Mansfeld region. The Luther Trail runs for approximately 81 kilometres through Mansfeld-Südharz and passes sites connected with the Reformation.
