Jerichow: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Jerichow Monastery, a former Premonstratensian foundation, is an important Romanesque monument. Restored monastic rooms, the cloister and a historical exhibition in the dormitory are part of its complex; it is also located on the Romanesque Route. Culture

The Jerichow Dutch windmill is the last of the town’s seven former windmills. It was built in 1857 to replace an older mill and preserves the complete interior construction from the time of its reconstruction in 1857.

Jerichow Town Church is a late Romanesque brick building dating from the first quarter of the 13th century. Its half-timbered tower dates from the 17th century. Inside there is a Renaissance epitaph made of marble and alabaster for Amtmann M. von Arnstedt and his wife.

The Brick Museum presents the origins, history and regional distribution of brick in the Elbe region. It offers bookable demonstrations of brickmaking, during which visitors shape a new brick from clay and make a miniature brick themselves. Jerichow Monastery Museum offers guided tours of the complex consisting of the church and cloister and can demonstrate brickmaking for interested groups of travellers.

The churches in the closer cultural context of Jerichow also preserve Romanesque architectural forms: The village church in GroßWulkow uses the same round-arched Romanesque brick style as Jerichow Monastery. Inside are a Romanesque triumphal cross dating from around 1160 and an original Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century. Redekin Village Church dates from around 1170; it is a four-part Romanesque brick church connected with the brick-building culture around Jerichow Monastery.

Jerichow Klosterklaus is offered as a souvenir in the form of a mild and spicy herbal liqueur.

Nature

West of Jerichow lies the Bucher Brack–Bölsdorfer Haken nature reserve. It covers 1,008 hectares and is part of the transboundary Flusslandschaft Elbe Biosphere Reserve. The landscape consists of a mosaic of wet meadows, remnants of floodplain forests, shrubland, dune ridges, channels and ponds. It provides diverse breeding, resting and feeding habitats for birds, including white-tailed eagles, cranes, white and black storks, and ospreys.

The „Alte Elbe“ and „Bucher Brack“ protected area offers a 2.5-kilometre nature trail between Jerichow and Klietznick. A 3-kilometre footpath and cycle path crosses the Elbe meadows to the main channel of the Elbe. Jerichow is also connected to local hiking and cycling routes that are linked to the Elbe Cycle Route.

Leisure

The Zabakuck Tourist Centre offers fishing, pedal boating and bicycle rental. Its bathing area includes a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, a bathing jetty and DLRG lifeguard supervision. Swimming is also possible at a 10-hectare gravel lake; walking areas lie between meadows and pine forests.

Zabakuck Zoo keeps more than 20 animal species, mainly native wild and domestic species. It has begun working with endangered breeds, including Bergische Kräher chickens, German Salmon Faverolles, Bentheim Black Pied pigs and Bergische Schlotterkämme chickens.
