The church was built in 1805–1806 on a hill above the village, on the site of an earlier church. Inside, it has a mirrored ceiling with restrained stucco decoration. A bronze bell from the previous church, dating from around 1300, has been preserved in Wethau Church. The churchyard wall dates from 1749. The local architectural heritage also includes a probably old brewery, which is likely the oldest house in the municipality.

Wethau’s historical development was favored by its location on the old military and trade route between Naumburg and Weißenfels. The stream that gave the village its name once powered several mills in the village.

Winegrowing in Wethau was first documented in 1205. Wethau was one of 62 wine villages associated with Pforta Cistercian Monastery. Commercial winegrowing in Wethau ended at the beginning of the 20th century because of phylloxera. Some hobby winemakers continue to grow vines on private land in Wethau. Since 2021, the Cabernet Blanc grape variety has been cultivated in a vineyard in Wethau.
