Culture and History

The church was built in 1805–1806 on a hill above the village, on the site of an earlier church. Inside, it has a mirrored ceiling with restrained stucco decoration. A bronze bell from the previous church, dating from around 1300, has been preserved in Wethau Church. The churchyard wall dates from 1749. The local architectural heritage also includes a probably old brewery, which is likely the oldest house in the municipality.

Wethau’s historical development was favored by its location on the old military and trade route between Naumburg and Weißenfels. The stream that gave the village its name once powered several mills in the village.

Landscape

Wethau lies in a protected valley setting with green meadows and water from the stream that gave the village its name. The landscape also includes fields, green valleys, and higher terrain with viewpoints.

Trails and the Region

The Zuckerbahn Cycle Path is a nearly 38-kilometer-long, gently sloping cycling route on a former railway line between Zeitz and Stöben. It runs through the Wethau Valley and connects the Elster and Saale cycle paths.

The Burgenland District connects the valleys of the Saale, Unstrut, and White Elster rivers with the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park. The Wine Route and the Romanesque Road in the Burgenland District region can be explored by bicycle, boat, on foot, or by car. For active exploration, the Burgenland District offers new and upgraded cycling and hiking trails, as well as opportunities for boating.

Winegrowing

Winegrowing in Wethau was first documented in 1205. Wethau was one of 62 wine villages associated with Pforta Cistercian Monastery. Commercial winegrowing in Wethau ended at the beginning of the 20th century because of phylloxera. Some hobby winemakers continue to grow vines on private land in Wethau. Since 2021, the Cabernet Blanc grape variety has been cultivated in a vineyard in Wethau.
