Mertendorf: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
In and around Mertendorf, the distinctive features of the local area range from historic churches and the Vehrigsweg trail to the mill landscape of the Wethau Valley. They are complemented by the “Halbberge bei Mertendorf” Special Area of Conservation and local offerings in the Cauerwitz district.
Culture and History
St. Martin Church in Mertendorf was inaugurated in its present form in 1817. The church has a separate, freestanding bell house dating from 1868, rather than an attached tower. Inside, there is a two-storey horseshoe gallery with an organ and, in the east, a pulpit altar.
The present-day Gothic church stands in Großgestewitz; a predecessor building is documented by 1424 at the latest. A Nikolaus chapel that was independent by 1510 at the latest now forms the northern extension of the church.
