Culture and History

Angern Castle preserves an unusually intact original layout of a high-medieval moated castle, including its construction, access, and defensive structures. Angern Palace is a Baroque three-wing complex built between 1738 and 1745; it is privately owned and not open to the public. The complex is divided into a main castle, a tower island with a keep, and a western outer bailey. The keep of Angern Castle stood on its own island; its walls were up to two metres thick, and it had seven storeys.

St. Mauritius Church in Angern dates from the 16th century. During the Thirty Years' War, it was destroyed down to its foundations, rebuilt from 1655 onwards, and expanded in 1753. A crypt was discovered beneath the church. A tabernacle from Angern's first church has also been preserved. The furnishings include an alabaster epitaph of Christoph Daniel von der Schulenburg bearing the Schulenburg coat of arms, as well as a rare Baroque donor portrait of Christoph Daniel von der Schulenburg.

Nature

Angern lies on the edge of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heath. The park of Angern Palace was laid out around 1738 as a late-Baroque garden with a symmetrical design. Around 1860, it was redesigned in the style of an English landscape garden. Today, the overgrown park provides a protected habitat for numerous animal species as well as native and exotic trees and shrubs.

The Alte Elbe borders Angern approximately 3 km to the east.

Getting Around

A Deutsche Bahn stop on the Magdeburg–Stendal line is located between Angern and Rogätz. From Angern, there are bus connections to Wolmirstedt, Rogätz, Zielitz, Bertingen, and Wenddorf. A cycling tour continues to Angern-Rogätz.
