Culture
The wall promenade forms a green ring around Gardelegen’s old town and offers views of historic buildings and the town moat. Remains of the former fortifications include the ruins of the Stendal Gate, the Salzwedel Gate and sections of the town wall. Between 2003 and 2007, Gardelegen’s wall fortifications were renovated in accordance with heritage conservation requirements and included in the statewide Gartenträume network.
Guided tours of the churches are offered at St. Mary’s and St. Nicholas’. Both St. Mary’s Church and the partial ruins of St. Nicholas’ Church can be visited year-round. Guided town tours can be arranged according to visitors’ wishes, lead to important buildings and squares, and can also accommodate visitors with walking frames or wheelchairs. The Future History app can be used to explore the town through historical photographs and texts about individual locations.
History
The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial stands at the historic site of the Gardelegen massacre. It commemorates 1,016 concentration camp prisoners from many European countries who were murdered near Gardelegen on 13 April 1945. The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial is an international place of remembrance, information and encounter.
The outdoor grounds of the Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial are open to individual visitors and groups during the day; admission to the memorial is free.
Nature
On the edge of the Colbitz-Letzlingen Heath, Gardelegen is listed as a hiking destination with attractive hiking trails. The area around Gardelegen encompasses fields, heathland, meadows and forests, which can be explored by bicycle or on foot.
Gardelegen’s wall fortifications are home to a Kneipp water-treading facility fed by the Laugebach stream. Gardelegen lies on two signposted cycle routes in the Altmark: the Altmark Circular Route and the Milde-Biese-Aland Cycle Route. Trips in the Gardelegen area can be booked year-round.
Leisure
Gardelegen’s Bürgerpark offers a wide range of play and sports facilities, including a skate park, a volleyball area, a boules court and fitness equipment.
