History
Mining shaped Sulzbach for more than 400 years. The Sulzbach stream was used for salt production for more than two centuries. Written records of Sulzbach begin in 1346.

The Brennender Berg is a smouldering coal seam that has been burning since the 17th century; sulphur-smelling vapours still rise from the rock. Sulzbach is connected to the Saar Coal Forest. The Ruhbachtal and Brennender Berg recreation areas are used for walks and longer hikes.
The Karl May Trail connects the Ruhbachtal and Brennender Berg hiking areas. It can be walked as two loops that explore Karl May’s life and work, and in 2023 it received the award for Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail.
The Sulzbach-Friedrichsthal Loop is listed as a 13.7-kilometre route. The Dudweiler Loop is an 8-kilometre route that follows narrow paths for most of its course.
