Freisen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At Freisen Wildlife Park, a 1.8-kilometre circular trail leads through areas where animals are mostly free-roaming. Deer, reindeer, Arctic foxes, birds of prey and other animals live there; the circular trail allows close contact with several species.

Nature

The Weiselberg Nature Reserve is located within the municipality of Freisen, near Oberkirchen. Remains of Roman-era buildings can be found on the summit. On the southern slope of the Weiselberg are the “Stone Sea” block fields, which formed as a result of major temperature fluctuations during the Ice Ages. The 570-metre-high Weiselberg is home to specialised plants, lichens and mosses; rare plants in the wet meadows of the southern foothills are protected.

The Freisen area is part of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and features extensive forests, species-rich meadows, river and stream valleys, as well as rock formations that provide habitats for plants and animals.

Culture and History

Near Schwarzerden, the Mithras relief was carved into a sandstone wall around 200 AD. Reitscheid is home to the Reitscheid Agricultural Museum, housed in a south-west German farmhouse dating from 1862. It displays furnishings, agricultural tools and household objects that illustrate rural life. The cultural programme also includes craft courses, music evenings and poetry readings.

The Freisen Mineral Museum displays stones, agates and petrified wood from the municipality and the surrounding area. The Oberkirchen Mineralogical Museum exhibits more than 1,500 specimens from over 90 types of minerals and rocks.

Leisure

The Weiselberg Baths in Freisen-Oberkirchen offer aquatic recreation for families. The swimming pool roof opens in sunny weather and closes when it gets cold. The facility also has a steam bath, a massage area and a hot whirlpool.

The Freisen EnergieTour 1 is 20.3 kilometres long and has 384 metres of elevation gain. The historic Ostertal Railway is connected to railway stations from which visitors can set off on walks or cycling tours in the region.
