Dillingen/Saar: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture

The archaeological remains of Contiomagus include houses along two roads, an early Roman cemetery, a crafts district and a temple complex. Contiomagus is the only settlement in Saarland for which a cult theatre has been documented. St. Maximin Pachten preserves a Romanesque lintel with a relief depicting a man fighting a dragon and a centaur. The Saardom is Saarland’s largest Catholic church and was built between 1910 and 1913 from grey-red sandstone in the neo-Romanesque style.

Dillingen/Saar has contemporary sculptures throughout the city, most of them made of steel, including works by artists such as Richard Serra and Eduardo Paolozzi. Five works from the 1990 Steel Symposium were installed along the Saar and on an axis leading towards the city centre. The Stadthalle was built between 1959 and 1962 and is included in Saarland’s list of monuments. Its large theatre auditorium has a hydraulically lowering floor for theatre and concert events, as well as an orchestra pit for 60 musicians.

St. Johann is the oldest church in the city of Dillingen and contains a Madonna dating from around 1720 as well as a historic baptismal font. The Pachten Museum presents Roman finds together with evidence from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Celtic civilisation. The Roman Park near the Pachten Museum includes a reconstructed Roman fort tower.

Nature

The Ökosee is a lake covering approximately 23 hectares on the western edge of Dillingen/Saar near Pachten, in a former floodplain, and has been a bird sanctuary since 2004. It provides a habitat for numerous bird species as well as insects, bats, amphibians and reptiles. On the western shore, an observation tower approximately four metres high facilitates birdwatching.

A 3.6-kilometre, barrier-free circular trail runs around the Ökosee. It is used for walking and jogging and is also suitable as a cycle path.

History

Dillingen was connected to the railway network in 1858 and received the first railway station on the Saarbrücken–Merzig line. The railway line to Bouzonville was added in 1897, followed by the line to Primsweiler in 1901. From Dillingen’s central railway and bus stations, the city centre can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
