History and Culture
Roman cremation burials near Neuheilenbach provide evidence of early settlement. A Roman cremation cemetery northeast of Neuheilenbach contained 20 stone cist graves.
Neuheilenbach was founded around 1828 by people from Heilenbach who were willing to emigrate and were referred to locally as “Brazilians.” The village was first mentioned under its present name in 1831. Sandstone quarrying shaped Neuheilenbach’s economic structure until the middle of the 20th century.
The Marien Chapel was built in 1964 and is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Neuheilenbach’s present-day filial church was inaugurated in 1967. On Bergstraße stands a richly sculpted Baroque shaft cross dating from 1772. Another Baroque shaft cross near Hauptstraße 3 dates from the 18th century.
Village Character
The weather radar station is also part of the village’s history: it was built in Neuheilenbach in 1998 and is one of 17 radar sites nationwide. A 32-metre-high weather radar tower in Neuheilenbach is visible from several kilometres away.
Getting Around
A hiking trail runs above Neuheilenbach between Neuheilenbach and Neidenbach. An e-bike charging station is located at Hauptstraße 7 next to the small community square.
