Eisenschmitt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Eisenschmitt is considered an idyllic, wooded mountain village away from the hustle and bustle of the world. In 1372, the place was first documented under the name “Yssensmyt uff der Salmen.” Those who choose Eisenschmitt for their stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

History

From 1503 to 1670, a larger ironworks with a hammer mill and forge operated in the centre of Eisenschmitt. Historical iron processing developed around local iron ore, charcoal from the surrounding forests and the water power of the Salm. Eisenschmitt’s iron industry in the Salm valley was finally shut down in 1868.

Culture

The fountain in front of the church is a local historical landmark designed by the artist Johann Baptist Lenz. Its three levels depict the ironworks, the trades involved in iron processing and scenes from Clara Viebig’s novel “Das Weiberdorf.”

The Clara Viebig Centre presents background information, original books from Clara Viebig’s time and other exhibits. Clara Viebig’s 1900 novel “Das Weiberdorf” contains landscape descriptions and fictional depictions of women around Eisenschmitt.

Nature

The area around Eisenschmitt combines forests, meadows and a river valley in a varied low mountain landscape. The Mühlenpfad trail follows the Salm and is characterised by extensive floodplain landscapes. Along the way, it offers views across the Salm floodplains and its gently incised valley.

Geographical Setting

The Bernkastel-Wittlich holiday district brings together the Volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the forest- and meadow-rich Hunsrück.
