Nature

The Mosenberg reaches 519 metres and is described as the last active volcano in the Eifel. It is connected to Windsborn Crater Lake and Hinkelsmaar. The Mosenberg is a group of five cinder cones; a former lava flow is visible in the Horngraben.

Hinkelsmaar is a dry maar with rare animal and plant species. The Reihenkrater Mosenberg protected area includes the Mosenberg, Windsbornmaar and Hinkelmaar and covers approximately 62 hectares within Bettenfeld. Windsborn is the only true crater lake north of the Alps. Rare plants and endangered dragonflies live in its shoreline areas. Swimming and fishing are prohibited in Windsborn Crater Lake.

Activities

The approximately five-kilometre-long Heimatspur Mosenberg Crater Lakes trail runs around Windsborn Crater Lake and connects it with Hinkelsmaar and Bettenfeld Volcano Experience Park. Mosenberg Volcano Experience Park exposes a large cross-section through a volcanic cone. The exposed geological areas reveal volcanic vents, layers of lava and cinder.

Mosenberg Volcano Experience Park can be reached on foot from the Hinkelsmaar/Crater Lake car park in approximately 20 minutes. Mosenberg Panoramic Tower offers views to the southeast across the Lieser Valley, Manderscheid and the Hunsrück. Bettenfeld is connected to regional hiking and cycling opportunities via the VulkaMaar Trail, Lieser Trail, Eifelsteig, Kosmos Cycle Route and Vulkaneifel Trail Park.

Orientation

The youth guest house in Bettenfeld accommodates groups of up to 38 people. It is open to hiking and pilgrim groups travelling through the Vulkaneifel or exploring it from Bettenfeld. Facilities include group dormitories, showers, toilets, a group kitchen, a dining hall and a multi-purpose sports hall.

The Mosenberg Biological-Ecological Station accommodates groups working on limnological, geological, plant sociological or other field ecology questions for research or teaching purposes. The campsite offers showers, toilets and electricity connections.
