Bengel lies on both sides of the Alfbach between the Moselle hills and the Eifel Mountains. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Bengel can then continue searching for accommodation. The village has its own railway stop on its outskirts.

In Springiersbach, a locality belonging to Bengel, there is a Baroque monastery church with decorative ceiling frescoes; its altars and choir stalls are designed in Rococo forms. The parish church of St. Quirinus in Bengel is a neo-Gothic hall church dating from 1901–1902.

History

The history of Springiersbach Monastery began around 1100 with its foundation by Benigna von Daun. Following secularization in 1802, the Bishop of Trier designated the Springiersbach church as the parish church of Bengel.

Five wayside crosses from the 18th century stand along the access roads to Bengel. They were probably intended to ward off evil, misfortune, and epidemics. The so-called Plague Cross, as it is known locally, is located at the fork in the road toward Springiersbach; its form suggests that it dates from around 1660. At the edge of the Kondel Forest, the Jacobs Cross commemorates Philipp Jacobs, who died as a soldier in Zanzibar in 1890.

Nature

The 2,500-hectare Kondel Forest lies between Bengel and Bad Bertrich and is described as an area for hiking and nature observation.

Cycling

A local cycling tour from Bengel through the Alftal valley to Wittlich is described as an easy, 32.3-kilometre route with 186 metres of ascent and 221 metres of descent. It can be used year-round.

Regional Products

The Springiersbach oil mill was built in 1856 and is one of the few surviving oil mills in Rhineland-Palatinate. The monastery shop sells regional Alftal honey as well as monastery products such as wine, beer, liqueurs, spices, vinegar, oil, syrups, and jams. The Carmel Springiersbach retreat house offers a varied programme and can be booked for events.
