Nature

Sonsbeck is a green town in the Lower Rhine region. The landscape includes the Sonsbeck Switzerland, part of the Lower Rhine Ridge. It reaches 87.20 metres above sea level; meadows, fields and partially wooded hills have been designated for local recreation.

The Geological Hiking Trail is 1.2 kilometres long, has six information stations and runs from the Roman Tower to the observation tower. The Erratic Boulder Trail completes it as a circular route and displays erratic boulders found during gravel excavations in the Lower Rhine.

History

The Roman Tower is an early-period brick round tower dating from the early 15th century that formerly served as the tower of a territorial lord’s mill. The St. Gerebernus Chapel is connected with the historic centre of Sonsbeck. It is also associated with a nearby fortified watch post from Roman times.

Sonsbeck’s historic pottery tradition included 90 potteries that operated from 1649 to 1903. They produced earthenware, relief plates, tiles, jugs and ornamental bowls.

Culture

The Gommansche Mill houses an exhibition on the history of pottery in Sonsbeck and has been used as a cultural meeting place since 1992. The Tietz Ceramics Museum is dedicated to Lower Rhine ceramics and also displays paintings and bronze sculptures by local artists.

The Schweinemarkt Fountain depicts a sow and three piglets. The figures’ heads, ears, legs and curly tails are movable. The fountain is described as the largest of its kind north of the Main line in Germany.

Getting Around

An e-bike charging station is available in the centre of Sonsbeck. NIAG bus route 36 connects Sonsbeck with the railway stations in Geldern and Xanten. The Roman Water Sources Loop is a themed loop of the Roman Lippe Route.

Experiences

The Pauenhof Tractor Museum displays more than 360 tractors in ten halls covering approximately 5,000 square metres. Visitors can drive a tractor in the four-hectare park of the Pauenhof Tractor Museum.
