History
Sassenberg’s historical town route is a nearly two-kilometre-long trail presenting traces and remains from the period of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. Sassenberg’s animal park was expanded to include a pheasantry in the late 17th century. More than 160 wayside shrines and roadside crosses are located within the town area.
St. John the Evangelist was built in 1670 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. Haus Schücking in Sassenberg was built in 1754 according to plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun for the prince-bishop’s chancellor, Engelbert Schücking. The building can only be viewed from the outside.
The visitor profile for the EmsRadweg connects Haus Schücking in the town centre of Sassenberg with a walk through the former animal park, which is known locally as Brook.
Cycling
An approximately 14-kilometre circular route featuring wayside shrines runs through and around the centre of Sassenberg. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle.
