Culture

The Recklinghausen Icon Museum is the world’s most significant museum of Eastern Christian art outside Orthodox countries. Its collection comprises almost 5,000 icons, gold embroideries, miniatures, and wood and metal works from Eastern Christian regions. The icon collection contains works dating from the 13th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

The Recklinghausen Kunsthalle presents changing exhibitions of contemporary art in a former high-rise air-raid shelter. The Retro Station presents the history of Recklinghausen in three sections: from the city’s development up to 1900, the region’s mining history, and the events of the 20th century.

Halden-Hügel-Hopping is a route across around 20 spoil heaps and natural hills that brings mining, structural change, and industrial heritage to life.

Getting Around

The Recklinghausen cycle route is being developed as a north–south cycling connection between the city center, the southern part of the city, the Emscher, and the city boundary with Herne.

The high ropes course in Recklinghausen-Suderwich offers activities at heights of six to eleven meters.
