Oerlinghausen has 120 kilometres of signposted hiking trails through deciduous and mixed forests as well as the heathland of the Senne. The Hermannsweg trail runs through the town and offers longer hikes towards Detmold or Bielefeld.
Nature and Trails
Several hiking trails in the Wistinghauser Senne pass the paddocks and grazing areas of the ponies and Highland cattle. Visitors can watch Scottish Highland cattle and Exmoor ponies grazing there.
The 26 Tweten can be explored on foot; they are marked with blue signs. A 2.15-kilometre circular route follows the Tweten in Oerlinghausen.
Culture and History
The Alexander Church probably dates back to the ninth century and preserves elements of a Romanesque basilica. Choral and orchestral concerts are held there regularly.
The Kumsttonne is the stump of a windmill dating from 1753 in Oerlinghausen. In good weather, it offers distant views and serves as a starting point for walks and longer hikes.

Getting There and the Region
The A2 and A33 motorways are close to Oerlinghausen; from either motorway, it is only a few kilometres to the town. Regional trains from Bielefeld stop at Oerlinghausen station every hour, from where a connecting bus continues to Oerlinghausen.
Oerlinghausen is a starting point for tours through East Westphalia-Lippe, including visits to the Hermanns Monument, the Externsteine and Sparrenburg Castle.
