Above Referinghausen, the Marien Chapel stands next to the historic Heidenstraße. Locally, the Heidenstraße is described as a centuries-old military and trade route from Cologne to Leipzig and as part of a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. After the village fire of 1781, the church in Referinghausen was once again available for services in 1797. It houses a Romanesque seated Madonna dating from the 13th century.
